True grit
In the 1968 London to Sydney Marathon, Ford Australia’s three-car works team of XT Falcon GTs finished third, sixth and eighth outright, and won the prestigious Team’s Prize. It was an incredible feat unmatched by any other Falcon GT model; international success against the world’s best teams and drivers of which we can all be immensely proud.
Although AMC has previously covered the story of the Falcon GT and Monaro GTS teams that competed in the ‘68 Marathon in great depth (AMC Issues 10 & 11), there have been other major international rallies that featured Australian muscle cars.
One of these was the 1977 Singapore Airlines Rally. This event also went from London to Sydney, but because it took a longer route than the inaugural ‘68 Marathon, it was promoted as “the longest car rally in history”.
