While Peter Brock would make the Torana GTR XU-1 famous by claiming his first Bathurst victory in 1972, this car was already an established winner in another form of motorsport. In 1971 Colin Bond and navigator George Shepheard drove a Holden Dealer Team XU-1 to victory in the Australian Rally Championship. Bond and Shepheard also won the title in 1972 and 1974 in HDT Toranas and it was the rally car that featured in the “when you’re hot you’re hot” campaign. This was the only car to have in that golden era before the Japanese took over the sport.
