At the 1969 Melbourne Motor Show GM-H wowed the crowds with the Holden Hurricane concept supercar. Just a few years earlier the most exciting Holden you could buy was the six-cylinder four-door HR Holden, but now here was a Holden to rival any Ferrari or Lamborghini.
Of course, it wasn't real; it was just a show car – but it did introduce the all-new Holden 253/308cid V8 engine.
And GM-H had more in store, because the following year came the Torana GTR-X – and unlike the Hurricane show car, the GTR-X was a real production car. Powered by the LC Torana XU-1 engine, the GTR-X was capable of over 210 km/h and clocked the standing 400 metres in 16.4 seconds.
