This is a rare and significant Brock HDT VL Commodore in that it’s one of just 173 Plus Pack versions, which included the controversial Energy Polarizer.

As a November 1986 build, it’s also one of the last Brock HDT Commodores before the shock parting of ways between Holden and Brock. Holden took the drastic step of ending the partnership with the Bathurst legend due to Brock’s intransigence over the Energy Polarizer. Holden did not believe Brock’s claims that the crystal-and-magnet device improved ride, performance and fuel economy, and therefore requested it not be fitted to HDT vehicles. A standoff ensued; the end came in February, 1987, when Brock unveiled the Director model, complete with the controversial Polarizer.

This car, therefore, is one of the last Polarizer-equipped HDT Commodores Brock produced before the split. It features the 11-colour ‘lightning bolt’ rear window sticker which according to Brock was the aerial for the Polarizer; the two ‘Plus Pack’ model stickers, and the ‘Peri Integration’ sticker signifying Brock’s partnership with the controversial chiropractor, Eric Dowker.

The Plus Pack featured a low-restriction, big-bore exhaust with headers designed to align with Group A racing regulations, cold air intake and a higher-pressure fuel pump.

The car is described as being in outstanding original condition. The odometer indicates less than 85,000km; the Permanent Red paintwork is unmarked save for some front spoiler stone chips and an unusual blemish on the top of the plenum chamber. The car carries Peter Brock’s signature on the passenger sun visor.

The 1986 Holden VL Commodore Group A SS ‘Plus Pack’ is being sold unregistered and at no reserve at Donington’s October Collector & Competition Car Auction. For full details visit https://online.doningtonauctions.com.au/m/view-auctions/catalog/id/261
