The highlight - or lowlight, if you're a Holden fan - of the 1973 Bathurst 1000 had nothing to do with speed. It was the drama of watching Doug Chivas, Peter Brock’s much older co-driver, attempting to push the Holden Dealer Team Torana XU-1 uphill to its pit area after it ran out of fuel. The rules stated that if he had any outside help the team would be disqualified, so Chivo was all on his lonesome (with just a few million watching on television) as he pushed the car, urged on by Brock the HDT mechanics. Eventually he collapsed, utterly exhausted, and the mechanics took over. Brock and Chivas went on to finish second, but that fuel miscalculation from the Holden Dealer Team had cost them what was looking like almost certain victory.
