For decades privateers made up the backbone of the Bathurst 500/1000, before this modern era of sponsorship and technology turned touring car racing into a professional occupation for all involved.

In the early days of tin top competition, the size of your talent and the level of your determination - not the size of your wallet - dictated where you finished in The Great Race. While the likes of Peter Brock and Allan Moffat were dominating the sport and winning the race, there were some very notable performances behind them that deserve acknowledgment.

So that’s what we’re doing this week, celebrating the privateers who starred in the 1970s. None of these drivers are household names, but on their day they could compete with the best of them.
