Supercars often likes to talk up its openness, but the reality is only six drivers won races in 2022. That was down to two factors; firstly, Shane van Gisbergen’s dominance, but secondly it has become a battle between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have nots’ in terms of teams. Triple Eight and Dick Johnson Racing in particular, but also Tickford Racing and Walkinshaw Andretti United (WAU) to a lesser degree, have separated themselves from the rest of the pack.
But that doesn’t mean it isn’t a highly competitive field full of talented drivers, and the switch to the new Gen3 rules in 2023 has the potential to shake things up. But for now, let’s reflect on the year that was and pick the best drivers in this year’s Supercars Championship.
