Top 25: Bathurst Liveries
The most revered classic racecars are loved not only because have they achieved great success, but because they have done so while looking a treat. Good looks, of course, is a subjective topic, but that hasn’t stopped AMC from presenting our top 25 Bathurst 1000 liveries. Remember, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Or in the case of those on top of Mount Panorama, beauty is in the eye of the beer-holder.
Marlboro-backed cars always grabbed attention, but for some reason the cancer-stick brand’s logo transferred to the A9X better than to the four-door. If Brock’s 1978 and 1979 Toranas are considered the ultimate Australian muscle car technical package (big V8 in a compact hatch), then they also had visual presence. The fact Marlboro’s red mirrored GM-H’s main corporate colour means this was a match made in Holden heaven.
Has there ever been a better integration of a company logo into a racing livery than Shell’s effort with Dick Johnson Racing in 2003? Sadly, the yellow BAs needed an actual hard, protective outer layer when they came a cropper in one of DJR’s regular ‘everything suddenly turns pear-shaped’ moments. Nonetheless, the Dutch oil company’s famous motif made for a car with unique colouring and shapes.
Traditionalists had seen nothing like Moffat’s big-numbered, in-your -face, NASCAR-style Brut 33 livery when it appeared in late 1974. The big blue beast was a world away from the corporate Ford liveries Moffat had run with to that point. This XB proved a game-changer at Mt Panorama where duco was previously covered with sponsor signage and some striping. Where would we be without Brut 33?
When Moffat was not able to entice Faberge to continue sponsoring his operation he adopted a paint scheme borrowed from Alan Mann Racing’s Cortinas of the 1960s. In fact, many of Moff’s looks were adaptions of famous international liveries. The red hardtop had gold bumpers, bonnet bump and highlights... and not much signage. It was classy, while highlighting the lack of support from Broadmeadows.
