The 1985 HDT VK Commodore SS Group A is better known today as ‘Blue Meanie’. It's a nickname that's stuck, but what's really special about this car is its role in launching Holden onto the international motor racing stage.

Never mind that it missed the party for which it was conceived, the 1985 James Hardie 1000, due to production delays and the vagaries of FIA homologation.

Because far from being left at the altar, the VK Group A racer did win Australia’s biggest motorsport event the following year. It also gave a good account of itself on the international Group A stage in 1986, particularly in Europe, where it earned cult status for its sonorous engine note, its ‘familiar but different’ looks (an Opel Rekord on steroids) and link to the land of Crocodile Dundee.
