When Ford unveiled the new-generation Mustang in Detroit in September there was a critical piece of information missing - power.

Ford promised the new EcoBoost, GT and all-new Dark Horse models would be more powerful but we didn’t know how much more powerful until now. The headline grabbing figure is the new range-topping Mustang Dark Horse, which packs a 500hp (372kW) punch from its 5.0-litre V8.

That makes it the most powerful naturally-aspirated V8 in a production Mustang. That’s thanks to some significant engine upgrades to what is effectively a new permanent replacement for the limited edition Mach 1.

“Every time someone gets behind the wheel of a Mustang, we know they want to feel that strong connection to their vehicle – and we’re just as invested in creating that bond,” explained Suzanne Robinson, Coyote engine program supervisor. “With the increased responsiveness you get from the new dual throttle bodies, we’re wringing every ounce of performance we can out of our engine so Mustang enthusiasts can have that experience.”

The new Mustang Dark Horse will have a 500hp V8 under its stylish new bonnet.

The Coyote V8 in the Dark Horse gets a uniquely balanced crankshaft, forged connecting rods and strengthened camshafts which allow for more performance and stamina on the track.

The updated engine also gets dual intake and dual throttle body induction system, which are shared with the 5.0-litre V8 found in the GT model. This version of the ‘Stang makes 358kW and 562Nm of torque, which is a minor increase from the out-going model that managed 339kW/556Nm.

Finally, there’s the entry-level Mustang EcoBoost which runs a new version of its 2.3-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. It gets some major revisions and subsequently more performance, with it now pushing out 235kW and 474Nm compared to the old model’s 224kW/441Nm.

Ford Australia hasn’t confirmed local timing, pricing or specifications for the new Mustang yet, but it’s expected to arrive late in 2023.
