Even 20 years on, the Murphy/Ambrose incident at the Cutting remains one of those iconic moments on the Mountain – partly because the crash triggered a multi-car accident that blocked the track with just 15 laps to go, but mostly because of the heated verbal exchange between the two drivers afterwards.

“After 20 years, Repco decided these two racing legends needed to close the door on Supercars’ most famous argument, so we approached them both and were thrilled they were happy to be part of it,” said Mitch Wiley, Executive General Manager, Marketing at Repco.

The ad portrays a hapless holidaying couple taking a bus tour to Bathurst and the Mount Panorama circuit. Murphy and Ambrose are passengers in the bus, as are Matt Payne and Todd Hazelwood (but only as extras).

The ad ends back at the bus stop, where Jim Richards stands alone and forlorn. Having missed the bus, he utters the famous five-word phrase he used back in 1992 to address the unruly crowd from atop the winner’s podium.

Repco’s pre-Bathurst TV ad is becoming something of an annual September institution.

“September means one thing for us and it’s not the AFL finals,” said Mitch Wiley.

“The Repco Bathurst 1000 roars to life next month. As always, Repco’s annual Bringin’ the Bathurst TV ad is our way of celebrating with our fellow fans our shared passion for motorsport and Australia’s most famous motor race.”
