The Chevrolet Camaro as we know it is reaching the end of the road.
The American brand confirmed the long-anticipated news that it will stop building the current, sixth-generation of the pony car in January 2024. While the news of the Camaro’s demise isn’t a surprise, with Chevrolet having very little to say about its future despite it being due for replacement, there is hope for the future.
Scott Bell, vice president of Global Chevrolet, has confirmed that there are plans for the ‘Camaro story’ to continue.
“As we prepare to say goodbye to the current generation Camaro, it is difficult to overstate our gratitude to every Camaro customer, Camaro assembly line employee and race fan,” Bell said. “While we are not announcing an immediate successor today, rest assured, this is not the end of Camaro’s story.”
What that future is remains open to speculation, but it’s widely expected that Chevrolet will use the Camaro name for a new all-electric sports sedan and SUV, that will compete against the likes of the Tesla Model 3 and Ford Mustang Mach-E.
The Camaro name will also carry on in motor racing, with Chevrolet confirming it will continue to support the current models it races in Supercars, NASCAR, NHRA and more.
“Chevrolet’s products and our relationship with our customers benefit from motorsports,” said Jim Campbell, Chevrolet U.S. vice president, Performance and Motorsports. “Our plan is to continue to compete and win at the highest levels of auto racing.”
