We’ve known for a while the Camaro as-we-know-it is on borrowed time. While General Motors and Chevrolet haven’t come out and said it, the current model is likely to end production within the next three years.

The good news is that there is hope for a replacement, but not the kind most muscle car fans will be hoping for. GM has committed to an electric future and that will include its performance cars, with an electric Corvette already confirmed. Now we’ve had our first hint at what the Camaro could become.

GM in China recently unveiled an electric four-door sports sedan that could give us a glimpse into a potential future for the iconic pony car. Officially known as the FNR-XE Concept, this creation has dynamic, sporty lines and proportions, albeit with a longer roofline to suit the Chinese audience.

The next Chevrolet Camaro is tipped to become a four-door sports sedan.

While we’re not saying the FNR-XE previews the next Camaro, it does point to its most likely next evolution. There have been reports for years that Chevrolet will ditch the two-door layout in favour of a more practical four-door bodystyle that will allow it to also replace the Malibu to become the brand’s only sedan.

While this would be seen as a major departure for the Camaro nameplate, Chevrolet is probably buoyed by the success of the Ford Mustang Mach-E electric SUV, which has been a hit for its arch-rivals.

GM has developed the module ‘Ultium’ EV platform that could underpin this new model. It has so far been used in the GMC Hummer, but can reportedly be scaled down for the Corvette and other vehicles in different sizes.
