There’s no question that electric motors can out-muscle internal combustion. But there’s more to a muscle car than just brute strength.
The noise of a roaring V8 engine is something an electric motor just can’t replace… or can it?
Dodge unveiled the Challenger Daytona SRT Concept last week, which swaps the supercharged V8 ‘Hellcat’ engine for the new ‘Banshee’ electric motors. But it also features something the American brand is calling the ‘Fratzonic Chambered Exhaust’ which has been specifically designed to make noise to create the emotional response people get from a petrol engine.
While most electric cars take advantage of the near-silent running of electric motors to be quiet and refined, Dodge wants the opposite. It reportedly makes up to 126dB, the same volume as the Hellcat at maximum roar.
Dodge hasn’t revealed exactly how the Fratzonic system works, whether or not it’s just a big speaker or if there’s some connection to the electric motor speed and throttle position, but you can hear the system for yourself in the video embedded in the story.
