Chances are when you hear the word ‘Mustang’ the sound you play in your mind is a V8. It’s almost certainly not a 2.3-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine.

And yet that’s what’s available in the latest version of Ford’s famous muscle car, or at least in what the brand calls the Mustang High Performance 2.3L. This is the same engine that powers the blue oval’s Focus ST hot hatch but has been slotted underneath the bonnet of the Mustang to provide a V8 alternative.

Obviously it lacks the same 339kW/556Nm punch of the 5.0-litre V8, but the 2.3-litre four-cylinder turbocharged unit makes a respectable 236kW and 448Nm. Whether that’s enough to make it a ‘muscle car’ we’ll leave for you to decide, but from a driving point of you the Mustang 2.3L holds its own.
