Following on from our Think Pink article is this 1954 model Chevrolet Corvette featured on the cover of Wheels magazine way back in July 1956. This car is significant for several reasons. When it was photographed at Sydney’s Luna Park this was the first, and only, Corvette in Australia.
It was imported by Roy Hargreaves, a plastics manufacturer who was fascinated by the car’s revolutionary fibreglass bodywork. The first Corvettes featured ‘plastic’ bodies because production of the steel bodies had not been completed in time. The exterior finish was so good that Wheels said they were unable to spot the difference.
This Corvette featured the Chev big six (3.8-litre) with three Carter carbies and Powerglide automatic transmission operated by a two-speed floor-shifter.
It’s worth noting that this pink Corvette was for sale at the time. Buyers were invited to make an offer to Roy Hargreaves, c/o PO Box 23, Rockdale, NSW.
