In the summer of 1965/66 two American speedway racers, Marshall Sargent and Larry Burton, brought their Californian Super Modifieds over to race. Sargent’s motto was “man, you’ve got to have rubber” and to prove the point the pair brought out the widest rear tyres ever seen here in speedway racing, hand-grooved for traction, plus wings on the roof to give them the essential downforce. These were probably the first aerodynamic aids seen here - in speedway or road racing. Both cars featured serious V8s, one Ford, one Chev. Within a couple of years the Australian style of stock rods were redundant and the Super Mods had taken over.
