Graeme Brown was in his early 20s and working as a rigger on power stations in Victoria’s La Trobe Valley when he spotted a job advertisement in Auto Action. It was a moment that would change his life.
Brown remembers sitting in the backyard at some mates’ place in early to mid 1979 and telling them he was going to apply for that job.
“The ad read something along the lines of ‘rouseabout come truck driver required for a race team’. I applied and heard nothing for ages and ages, so I thought that the opportunity has passed me by. I was boarding with my mates and their parents and, this being long before mobile phones, put their home phone number down on my application as my contact number. One day John Sheppard rings up and asks me to come to Melbourne for an interview. I was shaking when I was speaking to him on the phone.”
