A heavyweight field of 36 Sports Sedans will line up this weekend in the Sports Sedan events at the Sydney Masterblast at Sydney Motor Sport Park.

There’s a lot at stake: not only is it the third round of the Precision National Sports Sedan Series but it's also round five of the Kumho Tyres NSW Sports Sedan Championship.

Also up for grabs in one of the races is the Des Wall Trophy, an annual award in honour of the late Des Wall, a long time Sports Sedan stalwart.

With the rules allowing far greater technical freedoms than other sedan categories, Sports Sedans feature huge front and rear spoilers, tube spaceframe chassis design and engines up to 6.0-litres. The 6.0-litre Chev V8 is the most popular choice of powerplant, but because the rules allow for engine transplants, the competing cars are not all Chevs.

Among the Chev-powered cars are Jordan Caruso’s Audi, Tony Ricciardello’s Alfetta, Anthony Cox’s Saab, Steven Lacey’s Camaro, Mark Duggan’s Aston Martin and even a little Toyota 86 for Willem Fercher.

Monaro driver Ash Jarvis currently leads the national series but is closely followed by Caruso, Ricciardello and Cox, while in the NSW Championship it’s Brad Shiels who shows the way in his amazing Fiat 124 Turbo (below).
