V8-powered Holden Commodores and Ford Falcons replaced Group A cars for the 1993 edition of The Great Race.

Holden heroes: Peter Brock ran is own VP Commodore alongside the Holden Racing Team - led by Wayne Gardner and Brad Jones.

It wasn't all V8s, Frank Gardner ran his BMW M3 team with Tony Longhurst partnered by British ace Steve Soper.

Then-rising star Paul Morris shared a BMW M3 with German star Joachim Winkelhock.

Glenn Seton and Alan Jones shared a EB Falcon until dropping out late with driveshaft failure.

Longtime privateer duo Trevor Ashby and Steve Reed upgraded to the new generation VP Commodore.

Former winner Colin Bond competed in the 2.0-litre class in a Toyota Corolla.

Stuart McColl and Peter Gazzard shared the second Bob Forbes Racing Commodore.

Not everyone could afford to switch to a new VP Commodore in time, with several privateers running the older VL model.

Troy Dunstan and Steve Harrington shared the second Advantage Racing Holden, alongside Peter Brock.

The new era attracted big field of 45 cars.
