The Falcon XW GT-HO Phase II was a very fast car in 1970. It was a road car designed to go racing, and in Series Production it showed itself to be capable of getting the job done on most, if not all, circuits. It certainly proved itself on that one track for which it was designed – Mount Panorama.

Torana’s new GTR XU-1 was defeated on the mountain that year as Ford celebrated its first Great Race win since 1967 – and thankfully preventing what would have been a hattrick of wins for rival Holden in the process.

Ford might have left it at that with the Phase II. But it didn’t, and instead prepared a third (and what would be final) chapter in the GT-HO story, released for public consumption a month or so out from the 1971 Bathurst 500.
