Port Melbourne was a hive of automotive activity in the late sixties. Apart from the locale being Holden’s epicentre, there was another operation producing cars from marques that could not be more different.
At a massive factory complex bordered by Cook Street, Graham Street and Bertie Street, Australian Motor Industries built Toyotas in large numbers, plus a smaller quantity of Ramblers imported as CKD (complete knocked down) kits from the American Motors Corporation. They were assembled here using enough local components to meet Australian regulations.
This included Rambler Rebels and Javelins, sold here with V8 power, which slotted them into the same category of the market as Falcon GTs and Monaros.
