The XK Ford Falcon’s racing debut has most commonly been listed in history books as occurring at the inaugural Armstrong 500 at Phillip Island, on November 20, 1960. On that most significant of days for domestic motorsport, two of the new Aussie birds scrambled around the crumbling seaside circuit.
This was just two months after the XK Falcon’s official release.
Bob Jane and Lou Molina were right in the fight for outright honours when the Falcon rolled while running second, with the track badly broken up. The car struggled on for third in class and 15th outright after eight hours, 22 minutes of racing. A second, slower Falcon, driven by Ron Phillips and Ern Seeliger, retired due to a holed radiator.
