Service manuals for classic cars are keenly sought after these days, so too are owners manuals – the smaller booklets given to customers when they bought the car. These were designed to be kept in the glove box, providing basic details on how to operate and maintain the car.
I found one for the XY series Ford Falcon, Futura and Fairmont models which includes some special advice for owners of the GT version.
Like, how to start them in cold weather.
“For cold starting with V8 engines press the accelerator pedal once all the way to the floor for a moment and then release it. This sets the automatic choke to give the engine a ‘rich’ fuel mixture for cold starting.
“If the engine has been stopped for only a short time, merely depress the accelerator pedal half way and hold in that position until engine functions. Pumping the accelerator pedal before you start up does not do any good – you’ll only flood the engine with fuel and it won’t start.
“In case of flooding, press and hold the accelerator pedal to the floor while you operate the starter.”
There’s also this warning for Falcon GT owners, which is important enough to appear in bold type:
“IMPORTANT. The GT tachometer is red segmented between 6000 RPM and 8000 RPM. The standard GT engine should not be revved higher than 6000 RPM. Failure to observe this maximum engine speed will void the warranty.”
